About The Book
Real Women, Real Leaders profiles women thought leaders who provide personal, useful insights into their leadership journeys. Using the 16 leadership competencies developed by Jack Zenger and Joe Folkman , the women leaders describe their own experiences and offer guidance on topics such as building alliances, mentoring other women, balancing family and career, and overcoming obstacles in a man’s world.

•  Studies show that companies flourish when women occupy leadership positions. Why is this? What are the unique leadership skills that women bring to bear?

•  Relatively few women have attained top management positions, despite much progress. Why is this? What are the obstacles women must still overcome in business and how do they do it?

The editors have extensive leadership and board experience in the fields of education, publishing, technology, non-profits, and foundations. They have unprecedented relationships and friendships with women leaders across a variety of industries.

According to a 2011 study by UC Davis of the 400 largest companies in California, only 9.7 percent of boardroom seats or top-paying executive positions were held by women. Thirty-four percent of companies had no women on their executive board, and none of the companies had an all-female board. However, a recent Catalyst.org study reported that Fortune 500 companies with three or more women on the board outperform other companies, with 53 percent more returns on equities, 42 percent more return on sales, and 66 percent more return invested capital.

Why are women so underrepresented in top management when their impact on business is so positive? What are the obstacles women still face, despite much progress, in reaching senior management? And why is it that, once they achieve leadership positions, women are such outstanding leaders? What are the attributes they bring to bear on leadership that differ from the contributions of men? Real Women, Real Leaders sheds light on these questions through the personal stories of women leaders.
